Change in Social and Physical Functioning of Geriatric Patients Over a One-Year Period

Abstract
A rating scale which has been shown to be valid for the assessment of the physical and social functioning of geriatric patients was used to evaluate 207 patients. One year later, 132 of these patients were again evaluated. While the relative rank order of the patients in terms of physical and social functioning remained fairly constant, both males and females showed deterioration. The finding that geriatric patients in a State mental hospital appear to show a gradual decline, physically and socially, over time was discussed in terms of possible biasing due to selective dropout rates.
