Abstract
The examination of the carotenoids present in samples of a light colored "Malay" and a deep colored "Bissao" palm oil is described. Both oils showed a close similarity to those previously described (Hunter and Scott, Biochem. Jour., 1941, 35, 31; Hunter, Scott, and Edisbury, Biochem. Jour., 1942, 36, 697). The unsaponifiable matter obtained from "Malay" palm oil contained [alpha]-, [beta]-, and [gamma]-carotenes, lyco-pene, the carotenoid intermediate between [gamma]- and [beta]-carotene on the chromatogram, and xanthophylls having absorption spectra similar to those of the neoluteins. That from "Bissao" palm oil showed the presence of lycopene, neo-lycopene, and [gamma]-carotene in addition to the [alpha]- and [beta]-carotenes which are mainly responsible for the deep color of the oil. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
