Abstract
The metabolism of testosterone by cultured human fibroblasts derived from skin in the deltoid area of 4 adult males and 6 adult females was investigated. Testosterone-14C was incubated with monolayer cultures for 48 hr and the following labeled metabolites were identified: 5α-androstan-3α,17β-diol, testosterone, androsterone, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, AlΔ4-androstenedione and androstandione. The amount of testosterone metabolized by the 17β-OH versus the 17=0 pathway was expressed as the 17β-0H/17=0 ratio. No differences in testosterone metabolism between fibroblasts from adult males and females were found. This is contrary to the report of Shanies et al (1).Keywords
