Abstract
Cyclopentadienyl(cyclo-octa-1,5-diene)cobalt(I) reacts with 1 mol. of trityl fluoroborate to give the cation C5H5CoC8H11 +, but cyclopentadienyl(cyclo-octa-1,5-diene)rhodium(I) gives the neutral compound Ph3C·C5H4RhC8H12, in which the cyclopentadienyl ring has undergone an electrophilic substitution. 2 Mol. of the reagent with C5H5RhC8H12 afford the cation Ph3C·C5H4RhC8H11 +. Both cations readily add nucleophiles to give substituted diene complexes. Mass, infrared, ultraviolet, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra are used to characterise the new compounds.
