Abstract
Rate constants for the one‐electron reduction of various bipyridinium compounds by eaq(2.0 – 6.5 · 1010 dm3 mol−1 S−1) and CO2−1 radical (2.0–9.0 · 109 dm3 mol−1 s−1) and the resulting bipyridinyl radical spectra produced have been measured. One‐electron transfer rate constants between the pyridinyl radicals formed and FAD are of the order 109 dm3 mol−1 s−1 when ΔE1 between acceptor and donor is positive. In some cases the equilibrium constant Ke1 is determined enabling ΔE1 to be calculated by the described method. Values for the one‐electron reduction potential of FAD at pH 7.0 = –236 ± 7 mV and pH 11.5 = –486 ± 6 mV are found using the bipyridinium compounds as reference standards.
