Ultrastructural characteristics of spermatogenesis inPecten maximus(Mollusca, Bivalvia)

Abstract
The ultrastructural characteristics of the male germinal cells are described in Pecten maximus. Auxiliary Sertoli-like cells are observed in close contact with the gonia. They probably play a trophic role during the first stage of spermatogenesis. The spermatozoon of P. maximus is detailed for the first time. It can be considered as a primitive type, with a short acrosome but without axial rod. Occasional abnormal spermatogenesis and phenomena of degeneration are recorded. Cellular remains and residual spermatozoa sometimes appear to be phagocytosed by macrophagic cells.
