Further Evaluation of Aortic Valve Homografts Sterilized by Electron-Beam Energy

Abstract
Clinical results with the use of irradiated aortic valve homografts in 45 patients are reported. These valves have functioned satisfactorily up to 2 years. Forty-four per cent of the surviving patients developed a murmur suggestive of a degree of aortic valvular insufficiency. One required re-operation, and all others remain in excellent compensation. Emphasis is placed on the precise surgical technique of implantation and the proper selection of graft size, as well as the technique of preservation of the graft in obtaining a satisfactory hemodynamic result.
