Abstract
The "average" vertical temperature distribution of a stratified freshwater lake can be obtained from a series of samples by various techniques. Two of these are described: computation of the average temperature at different levels and computation of the average depth of a number of isotherms. It is concluded that the latter technique can, under certain conditions, give a more realistic approximation of the observed temperature profiles, especially in the thermocline region.
