TIME RELATIONS IN RENAL EXCRETION OF THRESHOLD AND NO-THRESHOLD SUBSTANCES

Abstract
A lag in increased output of water behind increased molar concn. of water in plasma is confirmed; a similar lag is found for chloride and attention is called to a similar older finding for glucose. There is no lag in increased creatinine output in response to an increased plasma creatinine. The view is proposed that threshold substances in general show such a lag and that no-threshold substances do not. Since this lag is not peculiar to water it seems unnecessary to resort to the hypopitres-sinemia theory to explain the water lag. Viscosity and conductivity methods capable of detecting changes of 0.02 g. protein per 100 cc. and of 1 gm. NaCl per 100 cc., respectively, vising samples of a few tenths cc. of serum are described.
