Effects of Eye-Stalk Removal on Decapod Crustaceans

Abstract
Investigators found that during molting following eye-stalk removal in Uca and other crabs, death ensued. It was assumed that a hormonal secretion from the sinus gland affected the viability. In experimental Ucas, with eye-stalks removed, death resulted during molting; but when water was added to cover the crabs during molting, no deaths occurred. Hence, molting and viability can hardly be said to be under hormonal control.
