Abstract
Dry preparations of mixed ruminal bacteria and protozoa were evaluated as a potential source of protein and B-vitamins for monogastric animals. Properly dried preparations gave a Protein Efficiency Ratio of 3.6 with a true digestibility of 74 to 80%. Sulfur amino acids appeared to be limiting, but the levels of lysine and tryptophan were found to be quite high as were the levels of vitamin B12, biotin, and riboflavin. As a protein source the preparation should replace approximately 175% of its weight as soybean protein. Preparations from pasture-fed animals appeared to be acutely toxic, but no evidence of acute toxicity was seen in preparations from animals on dry feed. Copyright © 1964.
