Gamete Eliminator Adjacent to the wx Locus as Recealed by Pollen Analysis in Rice

Abstract
A previous study in rice revealed that Wxa (nonwaxy endosperm) could not be transferred from PTB 10 to T65wx To clarify this phenomenon, the F1, hybrid was backcrossed with T65 wx- Two semistenle BC3F1, plants were heterozygous for wx, but they produced only waxy seeds on selfing. Pollen analysis revealed that nonwaxy pollen grains were present at a frequency of 14.8 × 10−4, indicating that most Wxa pollen grains were eliminated during gametogenesis The results showed that PTB 10 and T65wx carried S10a(t) and S10(t), respectively, and that S10(t) induced abortion of gametes that carried the opposite allele, S10(t), which was linked to Wxa The estimated frequency of recombination between wxand S10(t) suggests that the gamete eliminator detected is very close to the wx locus. Molecular analysis of the eliminator may thus be facilitated.
