A switching controller for a magnetic bearing

Abstract
This paper presents a sliding-mode controller for magnetic bearings. The experimental setup is a 72 kW, 250 kg induction motor for a turbo-fan. It is shown that such a controller, for which the output drives the switches directly, needs a lower switching-frequency than a conventional PD-position controller with an underlying PI-current-control and a pulse width modulation.
