Abstract
The metabolic changes resulting from the administration of phenylhydrazine in two cases of polycythemia vera included an increase in endogenous N catabolism, corresponding increase in O2 consumption, an almost complete retention of Fe derived from destroyed erythrocytes, and an increase in circulating reticulocytes. The increase in the rate of formation of urea and to a lesser extent of bilirubin was greater than their rates of excretion. Both patients remained approximately in P balance. There was also an increase in leucocytes, and in unidentified urinary pigments, a marked decrease in blood viscosity and an inversion of the albumin-globulin ratio. Keywords
