Abstract
High yielding varieties of wheat and barley have a marked tendency to be constitutionally low in protein content. While varieties characterized by moderately high yield and high protein content are known, it is doubtful whether the maximum possible yield can be combined with maximum possible protein. The problem of breeding hard red spring wheats is complicated by this relation, while breeding soft wheats and low protein malting barleys is simplified. Keywords
