Congenital Dislocation of the Hip in the Newborn

Abstract
To the Editor.—It is surprising that Dr. Ritter concludes in his article on congenital dislocation of the hip in the newborn (Am J Dis Child 125:30, 1973) that "... we feel all children with unstable hips should be treated for at least six weeks." Nowhere in his study are there controls which indicate that children without treatment would fare poorly. Many experienced clinicians feel that the newborn's unstable hip may be a self-limited condition and may not be the same entity as congenital dislocation seen later on in infancy. Unless a prospective controlled study is done, manipulation of the newborn hip by a malleable aluminum brace must be considered experimental and unproved.
