Feeding Chronology and Diet Composition of Two Darters (Percidae) in the Iroquois River System, Illinois

Abstract
Etheostoma microperca and E. zonale are diurnal carnivores. Feeding activity in both species increased markedly (on Sept. 9-10, 1977) after sunrise, peaked at midday and decreased after sunset. E. microperca fed mainly on copepods (38-76% of all food items); in late afternoon the diet contained fewer copepods than usual and more chironomids. E. zonale fed most heavily on chironomids (59-96%) at all hours.
