Abstract
The first paper in our series of studies of undernourished children described various factors concerned in malnutrition, and gave data concerning the gain in weight when the children were fed in the hospital. The next phase of the subject is that of the basal metabolism of the same underweight children. Our metabolism figures have been referred to the standards published by Benedict and Talbot,1 but we have determined basal metabolism on normal children besides, so that we might note any variations between our normal children and theirs which might be due to differences in locality or experimental conditions. Little work has been reported on basal metabolism in malnutrition, and most of it has concerned infants. Blunt and her collaborators 2 worked with older children, and found a high total metabolism calculated on the basis of the Benedict-Talbot weight standards as well as an excess metabolism per kilogram and per squareThis publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
