Exchange of Gases Between Alveolar Air and Pulmonary Capillary Blood: Pulmonary Diffusing Capacity

Abstract
Pulmonary gas exchange occurs in 3 main steps: exchange within the alveolar gas; exchange across the pulmonary membrane; and diffusion and chemical combination (depending on the particular gas) within the pulmonary capillary blood. This review dealt with the relative importance of these steps, methods for measuring some of the parameters which determine the speed of the processes, and the values of the parameters. The results are in essential agreement with generally accepted versions of the pathological-physiology in the respective conditions. A promising avenue of further investigation is the use of these methods to investigate the hemodynamics of the pulmonary capillary bed.
