Abstract
A cell line derived from Fischer rat kidney was treated with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) or dimethyl sulfoxide (control). Cells treated only with the carcinogen underwent morphologic transformation in vitro and produced progressively growing transplantable tumors when injected into homologous hosts. Although the transformed cell line was negative for infectious virus before inoculation into animals, a type-C RNA virus was activated from a cell line derived from the tumors. Since infectious type-C viruses are not usually demonstrable in rat tissues of normal or tumor origin, we suggest that the chemical treatment and activation of the virus may be related. Keywords
