Abstract
The possibility of a polyphyletic origin of the angiosperms is gaining recognition, partly because of our increased knowledge of fossil gymnosperms and partly because of new information derived from living plants. Considerable uncertainty still surrounds the time and place of the origin of the angiosperms. However, in the light of known rates of evolutionary processes, a much greater age must now be postulated for the earliest angiosperms. Intensive study of critical groups or regions is likely to yield new material and data needed in the search for a solution of the complex problem of the origin of the angiosperms.
