Abstract
This study describes diagnostic maize cob phytoliths. The classification was derived from a comparative study of an extensive phytolith reference collection of traditional cultigens and native Kansas flora. Phytolith isolates from sediment samples collected in a Great Bend Aspect village (14MN328) in central Kansas were analyzed to test the feasibility of recovering maize cob phytoliths in an archaeological site in the Great Plains. Diagnostic maize cob phytoliths were identified in two of the seven samples studied. Keywords
