Abstract
A content analysis of textbooks of New York State districts chosen for representativeness was done in terms of the following variables: attitudes conveyed about political authorities: the relationship of citizens to authorities and regimes; and the nature of politics, the nation, and democracy. Results of the data analysis for 6 districts—3 working class, 3 middle class—are reported. An analysis of variance for social class and grade effects and their interaction was performed. The study revealed some tendency for textbooks in middle-class districts to show a development toward more realistic and critical views of politics and government in the higher grades, while those of working-class districts do not.
