Abstract
A study of 20 gymnospermous species has shown that in most of them callose occurs in the helical checks of the S2 layer of cell walls in the compression wood tracheids. It is suggested that owing to its swelling properties callose plays a part in the longitudinal extension of compression wood. Keywords
