CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS REGARDING XANTHELASMA

Abstract
In a group of 51 persons (35 females, 16 males) with xanthelasma, 73% had serum cholesterol levels greater than 300 mg% and 79% of those tested had mild to moderate elevations of total blood lipids. Evidence of coronary artery disease was present in 69% of the males and 43% of the females. Factors observed with a high frequency and possibly related to the high incidence of hypercholesterolemia and coronary artery disease were obesity, the post-menopausal state (females), and diabetes mellitus. A striking variation in serum cholesterol levels was observed in many of these persons. A relationship between serum cholesterol levels and the size of the xanthelasma was suggested.
