Ten years' leprosy control work in Malaŵi (Central Africa) - I. Methods and outcome after treatment

Abstract
This paper describes the organizational structure of the LEPRA Control Project in Malawi (Central Africa) as it has evolved since 1973. It is meant to serve as a background to a series of publications, which will describe the pattern of endemicity in Malawi, relapse rates, pattern of disabilities and duration of treatment required to achieve slit-skin smear negativity. In addition to describing the methods employed by the LEPRA Control Project, some data are presented on the outcome after treatment in a cohort of patients. It would seem that probably only 3-5% of this cohort did not benefit appreciably from the antileprosy treatment offered.
