Abstract
The n.m.r. spectra of phenyl-silane and -germane recorded in a nonpolar solvent have been completely analysed. The parameters have been estimated at zero concentration and the origin of the chemical shifts is discussed. The dipole moments of the two compounds were also measured. The n.m.r. spectrum of phenylgermyl anion recorded in liquid ammonia was partially analysed. The parameters show that there is no delocalization of charge onto the aromatic ring. The relative acidities of germane and phenylgermane are discussed.
