Abstract
A stock-enhancement study of coastal cod was started in Austevoll in western Norway in 1983. An important objective of the study was the investigation of mortality patterns of the released fish. Natural morality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were estimated using Ricker's two-release method and virtual population analysis (VPA). Cod released as 0- and 1-group recruited to the local fishery as 2-group. In this prerecruit period the survival was estimated as 13% to 32%. Mortality was attributed to predation and cannibalism, and the results indicated both size- and densitydependent effects. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) of codlarger than 30 cm (≈ 2 + cod) was estimated as 0.22 year −1 . After recruitment to the fishery as 2-group, the mean fishing mortality coefficient was estimated as about 0.6 year −1 .Keywords
