Abstract
We show how both the “classical” expression for the free-energy density and Widom's alternative expression can be modified so as to be consistent with known and expected critical behavior in all dimensions. In so doing, we postulate that an increase in the effective range of interaction due to an increase in dimensionality will tend to inhibit density fluctuations. Keywords
