Project Aftercare: Followup to Residential Treatment

Abstract
A study of post-discharge breakdown in adolescent clients who improved while in residence led The Children's Home of Cincinnati to develop an agency Aftercare program. The Aftercare staff is made up of a social worker who deals with intra-familial problems; a special educator who aids in educational/vocational planning and placement; and a community services worker who uses community resources to foster the client's adjustment and ego development. Positive effects are that the client's stay in residence may be shortened and the residential treatment facility receives feedback for improvement of services. Although the model is not problem-free, this interdisciplinary approach may be adapted to any program returning clients to the community.
