Vegetation of the swamp is described and changes which have taken place during 5 years are recorded. The main zones, passing from land to water are 1. shrubby marginal area dominated by Kotschya africana. 2. broad zone of Miscanthidium violaceum and Loudetia phragmatoides 3. very wet zone of Miscanthidium and other grasses 4. Miscanthidium co-dominant with Cyperus papyrus 5. C. papyrus and associated species 6. aquatic plants of water edge. Substratum to a depth of 3m is described. Miscanthidium and Loudetia are rooted in gritty clay. C. papyrus forms a floating mat. An attempt is made to relate zones to changes in lake level since Pleistocene. Chemical analysis is given of soil and plants of each zone. Very little correlation can be demonstrated between concentration of replaceable ions in soil and minerals present in plants associated with it. There is some relationship between concentration of certain ions in plant material and distance from open water of zone where plant occurs. Water levels, rainfall and fluctuations of lake level are recorded.
