Abstract
Despite wide publicity in the press and in law-enforcement magazines, the report by Penneys, Israel and Indgin, in this issue of the Journal, represents the first study of Chemical Mace to appear in the scientific literature. Penneys et al. studied four cases of allergic contact dermatitis, two resulting from police use of Chemical Mace, and two acquired accidentally during laboratory evaluation of the product. They demonstrated that the sensitizing agent was the tear-gas component, 1-chloroacetophenone (CN), and not the solvent-carrier mixture.
