Hypoglycemic Effect of Ouabain in Dogs

Abstract
Ouabain (1.0 μg/kg per min) administered iv for 60 min in dogs caused a significant decrease in glucose and glycerol plasma concentration. The same dose of ouabain significantly inhibited the lipolytic and glycogenolytic effect of epinephrine. These metabolic changes caused by ouabain in intact animals might be explained either by a direct inhibitory effect on the adenyl cyclase system or by an indirect effect mediated through insulin.
