THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECTIVENESS AND POTENCY OF DIGILANID IN THE TREATMENT OF CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE

Abstract
Digilanid, a mixture of pure crystalline glycosides present in Digitalis lanata, was studied in 23 hospitalized and 20 ambulatory patients who required digitalization for congestive heart failure or to remain free of failure. The therapeutic dose and toxic dose by the Eggleston method was on the average of 6.6 mg. to 10.03 mg. respectively. The therapeutic effects occurred between 45% and 75% of the toxic dose. In terms of cat unit potency, the therapeutic and toxic doses were identical with those of Digitalis purpurea. The mixture of pure crystalline glycosides combined in constant proportion satisfies with a high degree of perfection the criteria for a satisfactory digitalis prep. The pharmacological and clinical properties of digilanid and digitalis leaf appear identical.
