THE PERFECT VALENTINE

Abstract
Jennifer Freeman's article is an example of Jean-Francois Lyotard's petit recit, a moving away from grandiose, pretentious metanarratives toward a local dialogue. The article is an exquisite fragment of everyday life narrated in what John Van Maanen has referred to as an “impressionistic tale,” a first-person account of literary quality that not only tells that the author “was there” but makes all of us feel that we were “there” and leaves us breathlessly terrified while, against our better judgment, a quiver of eroticism trembles down our spine. Not since Susan Krieger has a female voice spoken so eloquently and made us ponder about ourselves, our interactions, and our language.
