Abstract
Seromucoid, prepared by lyophilizlng the filtrates of human serum treated with HCIO4, was hydrolyzed in HC1. The hexosamines of the hydrolysate were separated by ion exchange chromatography. Normal seromucoid contains 91% glucosamine and 9% galactosamine. Seromucoid from patients with connective tissue diseases contains increased total hexosamine but the same galactosamine/ glucosamine ratio. In nephrosis there is increase of galactosamine and decrease in glucosamine, producing galactosamine/glucosamine ratio of 0.4. This abnormality tends to disappear with clinical remission. Keywords
