Abstract
How can our tropical forests best be saved? Chazdon discusses the answers to this question in her Perspective. The view in the 1970s that virgin forests should be preserved intact gave way to the 1980s view that forests can be sustainably managed and used. Now a report in this week9s issue by Cannon et al., which shows how diverse tree species can be supported in a logged forest in Borneo, exemplifies the newest approach to preserving our forests: management of a combination of untouched and logged forests for preservation of biodiversity.
