Some Factors Affecting the Toxicity of Cultures of Shigella Dysenteriae

Abstract
Both smooth (s) and rough (R12) variants of strain 32158 gave a great increase in yield of cells and in toxicity per gram of dry cells when grown under conditions, such as growth on. surfaces or with mechanical agitation, favoring aerobiosis. Glucose in medium decreased toxicity perhaps by favoring anaerobic metabolism. Most of the toxic factor is bound to the bacteria and released only on autolysis. It is water-soluble; only slowly inactivated by heat in acid or neutral soln. but rapidly in alkaline; is precipitated by 2/3 saturation with (NH4)2SO4, 33 to 50% acetone or a pH of 3 to 4; will not dialyse through cellophane and is completely resistant to proteolytic enzymes.
