Abstract
The influence of biologic dyes on bacteria and fungi is too well known to be reviewed here; this also applies to the comparative efficiency of different stains. But so far as I am aware, no work has been done on the effect of the position of inoculum in the presence of toxic substances. This is perhaps due to the fact that cultural methods have been so well standardized that few investigators feel the necessity of developing a new or different technic. The bacteria that stick to the transfer needle or any hyphae that can be jerked away from a test tube culture and transferred to a fresh medium constitute the inoculum. No two pieces of inoculum are alike either in quality or in quantity; nor have any of them the same position after they have been transferred.
