Abstract
Results of tagging Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) in Norwegian waters from the late 1950s to the early 1960s indicate that juveniles stay in nursery areas along the coast until an age of 4 to 6 years. Older, but still immature, fish migrate in all directions from the point of release, sometimes over very long distances. The same is true of mature fish emigrating from the spawning area. Mature fish show a remarkable homing response, returning repeatedly to the same area for spawning. Possible orientation mechanisms for the migration of Atlantic halibut are discussed.
