Abstract
A study on the drinking patterns of 410 male and 70 female alcoholics, hospitalized at Incognito Clinic, Oslo, is reported. The results show that the drinking patterns of these patients are very varied. The majority have both abstinence, moderate and heavy drinking represented in their drinking behavior. Almost 80 per cent report to have special events, in which they drink moderately, with more or less difficulties. It may seem that heavy and moderate drinking is qualitatively different types of drinking behavior, controlled by different mechanisms. The differences need to be investigated more closely. Keywords
