Abstract
The “new” generator reported here has been specially designed to decrease transient mechanical and heat loads. Essentially, this design allows the cold parts to rotate independently of the room temperature electromagnetic shield. The superconducting coil is excited by an asynchronous link, i.e. brushless inductive system. A 500 kW generator has been constructed to study the effectiveness of this new design in reducing fault effects. The design of the new generator is explained, including the description of the superconducting field winding, the rotating unions, and the telemetry system. The first tests are described including the measurement of temperatures and of the helium level. Keywords
