Formic Anhydride

Abstract
The parent compound of carboxylic anhydrides—formic anhydride—has now been synthesized in ethereal solution at −78° C by four different methods, and charactrized by 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, and IR spectroscopy. The anhydride undergoes partial decomposition to formic acid on distillation of the solutions, even at low temperature. equation image
