The Use of Sodium Fluorescein in Assessing the Rate of Healing in Corneal Ulcers

Abstract
Sodium is readily absorbed by the corneal stroma when there is no surface epithelium and the denuded area fluoresces under u.-v. light. This chemical can penetrate intact epithelium only after prolonged exposure but penetrates devitalized or developing epithelium more readily. The intensity of the fluoresence is a measure of the integrity of the epithelium.
