Pulmonary Involvement in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract
Macroscopic and microscopic examination of autopsy material, clinical history, roentgenographic and physical findings of 37 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 37 controls falling within the same sex and decade of life were compared. Although there were more pathological findings in the group with rheumatoid arthritis, with the exception of pleuritis and pleural effusions, no one macroscopic condition or microscopic finding distinguished the two groups. Although these findings confirm that pulmonary manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis are infrequent, they do not negate their existence. Whether diffuse interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis can justifiably be regarded as a manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis cannot be stated conclusively at this time.
