Abstract
IAA, 1-NAA, 2,4-D, kinetin, and benzyl adenine were inhibitory to the growth of excised tomato roots in glucose medium. GA3, myo-inositol, and two antiauxins, 2-NAA and NMSP, were stimulatory but growth did not approach that in sucrose medium. Glucose was not inhibitory in the presence of optimal sucrose, and was stimulatory in the presence of suboptimal sucrose. Glucose pretreatment markedly enhanced the ageing of roots in a subsequent growth period in sucrose, and the significance of this is discussed in relation to the growth stimulation caused by the antiauxins. Keywords
