Abstract
The investigation of the effect of nitric oxide on the photolysis of hydrogen iodide has been extended to 6 and –20°C. At these temperatures, simple inhibition by nitric oxide continued but nitrogen now appears as an important product. The nitrogen-producing reaction has the stoichiometry HNO+2NO→HNO3+N2 and its mechanism is confirmed as being HNO+NO⇌HNO ˙ NO HNO ˙ NO+NO→HNO3+N2 as has been suggested by previous workers. Keywords
