Vibrational Spectra and Structure of Oxamide and Dithiooxamide

Abstract
The infrared spectra of sublimed films of oxamide, dithiooxamide, and their deuterium analogs were obtained at —190° and 25°C in the region from 4000 to 400 cm—1. These spectra are consistent with the x‐ray data and satisfactory vibrational assignments were made on the basis of molecules with planar trans heavy‐atom structures with over‐all site symmetries Ci but close to C2h. An increase in frequency of v(CN) on deuteration accompanied by too large a decrease in δ(ND2) results from a strong mixing of these stretching and bending modes and from Fermi type resonances. Only ordinary hydrogen bonds were found so that the unusually high melting points of these compounds are due to a fortuitous combination of several factors related to their layer structures rather than to very strong hydrogen bonding alone.
