SeleniumSelenium is an essential trace element that has a key role in the activity of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that protects against oxidative tissue damage on a cellular level.85 Both internationally5 and within the United States86 geographic areas with low selenium levels in the soil or in pooled blood-bank serum samples generally have higher cancer rates than areas with higher selenium levels.
