Abstract
The authors describe and illustrate an insect rearing box which confines the insects by means of an electric shocking barrier. The container is an open, shallow box, 21 1/2 in. square and 5 1/2 in. deep with wood sides and a sheet metal bottom. Extending around the inside upper edge are 2 brass strips spaced about 1/16 in. apart and charged by a small bell transformer. In use, the insects are placed with food within the box and escape is prevented by the repelling shock caused by contacting the 2 adjacent brass strips. A portable rack holding 9 of these boxes charged by a single transformer is described. A 12 volt a. c. transformer was found satisfactory for most of the lepidopterous insects used. Adaptations of the electric barrier method to suit various entomological problems are suggested. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
